THIRTEEN

For the remainder of the week Katie took refuge in her work and with her friends. She didn't go into town, not even to retrieve the Susan B; she had Geoffrey bring back the repaired automobile.

Not once did Ben make an attempt to see her. She wasn't sure if not seeing him made things better or worse. She only knew she despised herself for what she had allowed to happen, for what she had discovered about herself. And for what she'd discovered about Ben. How could he kiss her the way he had when he was planning to marry Charlotte? How could he have betrayed his future bride and his friendship with Katie?

Even so, she longed to see him, longed to be with him, longed for more of his kisses.

That Friday the Homestead Woman's Suffrage Committee met to go over the final plans for the rally. An undercurrent of expectation charged the air in the dining room as the members of the committee—including Lark Jones and the Rudyards—gathered around the table.

There was good news to share at the start of the meeting. The majority of incumbents running for reelection had accepted the invitation to attend the rally, and one hundred percent of their opponents had agreed to be there as well. It looked as if this would be a hotly contested election year.

"Katie, you should be proud of what you've accomplished," Geoffrey said, and everyone around the table concurred.

She smiled, although there was no real feeling behind it. It was hard to be praised by her friends when she was feeling less than praiseworthy.

Sophia leaned forward. "I have something of interest to share. A reporter from the Idaho Daily Statesman is coming to Homestead to cover the rally. My brother told me about it this morning when he stopped by the house."

Katie's heart skittered at the mention of Ben.

"He says Katie's second column was picked up and reprinted in several newspapers in Idaho. It's created quite a stir, as it did here."

Did Ben ask about me?

"He says we can expect lots of folks to come to Homestead next week to hear the candidates. He says people want to know where the candidates stand on the war in Europe as well as on the vote for women. Ben also said we won't be able to stay out of the war much longer."

Blanche stiffened. "There would be no wars if such things were decided by women." She slanted an accusatory glare toward Geoffrey.

"Unfortunately," he replied, giving his shoulders a shrug, "we don't see any women sitting in Congress, where such things are decided."

"Katie will be the minimum age in September," Penelope interjected. "Maybe she should run for office."

Silence fell around the table. All heads turned in Katie's direction. It took her a moment to register what had been said, since her thoughts had been lingering on Ben. But once she realized why they were looking at her, she said, "That's a preposterous idea!"

"Is it?" Geoffrey asked.

"Of course it is. Utterly preposterous."

"You know more about politics and the way government works than most candidates, Katie," Penelope countered.
